“The Spirit”, Kaya Deckelbaum’s sculpture, represents the spirit of the Bulgarian people. Bulgaria behaved differently than most European nations during the turbulent years of the Second World War. The Bulgarians had the courage, the conscience and the spirit of humanity which gave them the strength to say NO to the Nazis. The people, the church, the king and prominent individuals stood up to Nazi Germany and DID NOT send their 50.000 Jews to be murdered in concentration camps. Kaya is proud and grateful to be the daughter of a nation that kept its moral integrity during immoral times. Bulgaria has proven that the moral stature of the people counts. Let Bulgaria proudly carry the torch of “The Spirit”
